"Nurse Studies" (4172300) 

The conception of the study program "Nurse Studies" (4172300) envisages, that by mastering this program, the students acquire first-level higher professional education. Duration of studies as provided bythe program is 3 years or 6 terms of full time studies. The program involves 120 credit points. The required previous education is general secondary education or 9-year basic education and 4-year secondary vocational education. The gained qualification – Nurse. Study program “Nurse Studies” (4172300) has been accredited by December 12th , 2011. Study program “Nurse Studies” (4172300) has been coordinated with the program of “Nurse Studies” for bachelors degree of Riga Stradina University which gives the possibility to continue the program of second-level higher professional education.

The acquirable contents of the program is divided into 3 parts:

  1. Compulsory part (A) – involves the standard of first-level higher professional education and is obligatory precondition for obtaining qualification of nurse, the proportion of which in the volume of credit points is 60%.

  2. Compulsory option part (B) – a student has the right to choose various additional program modules, the proportion of which in the total amount of credit points is 30%.

  3. Free option part (C) – a student can choose study courses of another scientific branches, the proportion of which in the volume of credit points is 10%.

The objectives of the study program “Nurse Studies” (4172300):

  1. Secure acquiring of first-level higher professional education in Nurse Studies.

  2. Train professional nurses who are able to satisfy public health care needs.

  3. Enable professional growth and give the possibility to prepare for obtaining second-level higher professional education.

  4. Ensure the basis for the knowledge and skills, which are needed in scientific approach of care.      

Tasks of the study program “Nurse Studies” (4172300):

  1. Apply the nursing process by helping individuals, families, groups of people in case of different health problems to achieve the commonly set aims.

  2. Synthesize health promotion, maintenance and rehabilitation in care for individuals, families and groups.

  3. By critically thinking apply acquired knowledge in humanities, care and the associated sciences, provide care for different individuals.

  4. By means of efficient communication skills collaborate with patients and health care team members in practice to meet the needs of different patients in health promotion maintenance and rehabilitation.

  5. Prepare, implement and evaluate the patient teaching plan to satisfy their needs for health promotion, maintenance and rehabilitation.

  6. Integrate care theories, which secure approval of clinical decisions and improvement of nursing practice.

  7. Integrate the conception into professional nursing practice about uniqueness of every person and respect to his life.

  8. Implement and take responsibility for acquiring education and professional growth in nurse profession.

  9. Provide knowledge in organization and management of nursing work.

Use the nursing process to satisfy individual’s basic health needs

Apply selected knowledge from the domain of humanities, care and the related sciences to give basic care to the individual.

Use the basic skills in communication to satisfy the individual’s health maintenance needs.

5.      

Implement teaching and learning principles to give basic care to the individual in his health maintenance needs.

Use teaching and learning principles to realize beforehand a worked out training plan for satisfying individuals' health rehabilitation needs.

Formulate educating plan to satisfy health promotion needs for families and groups.

6.      

Understand the meaning of research in nursing care practice.

Use interpreted research findings in nursing care and corresponding nursing care theory in planning.

Analyse selected research findings and nursing care theories to use them in nursing practice.

7.      

Acknowledge individual’s uniqueness and identify necessity to respect life from conception to death.

Provide the care for individuals who demonstrates conviction about uniqueness of every person and his value showing respect from conception to death.

Implement the care for family, group and/or community which spreads conviction about uniqueness of every person and his human value and respect to life form conception to death.

Realize problems in health care system.

Be aware of influence on care giving left by the selected trends and problems.

Verify the influence of problems on the practice of professional care.

Realize the need to study and improve one’s professional role throughout the life.

Manage the care of the individual client in satisfaction of basic health needs.

Manage the care along with other health care specialists for the group of individuals in case of frequently met typical health problems.
